We have compiled a buying guide to explain all the different performance air filters available for your car. Hopefully by reading this introduction to performance air filters any technical questions you may have will be answered.
At Venom we offer our customers a wide selection of filters ranging from a basic replacement panel filter to a full on race car spec carbon enclosed forced air induction system. We have a filter to suit everyone’s budget!
Why upgrade to a sports air filter?
Most people purchase a performance air filter because they want to increase the power from their engine. Replacing the factory fit filter with a performance filter will help the engine breath and perform better. If the engine can breathe better this makes the engine more efficient and therefore increases horsepower.
Combine your performance air filter with a performance exhaust and you get an engine which is extremely efficient. Air will enter the engine quicker and a performance exhaust system will get rid of the waste gasses quicker. Replacing the factory air filter and exhaust with performance products allows the engine to operate more efficiently and the results are increased power! Your engine will probably gain between 10-15% more power.
If you have a car that produces 150bhp standard you can expect a 10-15bhp increase in power...who wouldn’t want that?
There are three basic performance air filters to choose from.
Performance Replacement Panel Filters
A performance panel filter is one of the most common engine modifications done to any performance car. The performance panel simply replaces the factory fit filter in your air box. Fitment takes seconds, simply remove the old filter and replace with the new one! The performance panel filters are less restrictive than the factory fitted items and therefore helps to increase air flow to your engine.
There are numerous brands to choose from. Some companies offer a foam replacement whilst others produce cotton gauze filters. Both filters release extra power and are washable. When service time comes simply remove the filter, wash in warm soapy water, dry and re-fit (please note you must re-oil the filter using the manufacturers’ specified oil).
Performance panel filters offer a modest power gain of approx 5%. Prices from £25.00
Performance Induction Kits
A performance induction kit is aimed at the customer who wants to release as much power as they can by simply replacing the factory fit air filter. Most induction kits replace the factory fit air box with a distinctive cone filter. Factory fit air boxes can be restrictive and replacing them with a cone filter allows the car to breath a lot easier. This increase in efficiency translates to an increase in power. Expect approx 5% gain in power when you fit an induction kit.
Another benefit of replacing the factory air box with a cone induction system is the increase in induction roar. The engine will actually sound more aggressive. You can actually here the air being sucked through the filter into the throttle body. A great modification for the enthusiast who wants as much power as possible...awesome!

Specialist Performance Intake Systems
These air filters are for the customer that demands the very best induction system for their car. There are more and more companies now offering enclosed induction systems. These unique air filters are usually made from carbon fibre and are a replacement to the standard factory fit air box.
The enclosed carbon filter shields a high flow cone induction filter. Heat generated from a hard working engine can cause a normal induction kit to lose power. A flexible pipe at the front of the carbon filter draws cold air up from low down in the engine bay. These unique carbon enclosed filters help prevent heat-soak that can sometimes happen with cone filters. Hot air entering the engine means the intake charge is less dense which looses power. Keeping the intake charge cool makes the air denser allowing more air and fuel to be burnt resulting in more power. The carbon jacket found on these intake systems simply shields the filter inside from a heat build up. A superb idea that is very popular especially with turbo charged cars. A good example of these kits is BMC’s Carbon Enclosed CDA Kit, the Pipercross Viper Kit and last but not least the K&N Typhoon kits. Prices from £150.00
