We have compiled a buying guide to explain all the different types of performance brake upgrades available for your vehicle. Hopefully by reading this introduction to performance brakes any technical questions you may have will be answered.
We offer a wide selection of performance brake parts starting from a simple set of replacement performance brake pads right up to a 12 pot big brake kit. You will be able to find more detailed information when you view each manufacturer’s listings in detail. All brake pads and brake discs are sold in pairs. Big brake kits are sold in a front or rear kit.
Why change your cars brakes?
Your cars braking system is a vital part of your car, not only for performance but also for safety. Changing to a performance upgrade can be a very cost effective way of increasing your cars stopping ability, giving you a much safer and quicker stopping vehicle. Other benefits from a performance brake upgrade can be lower brake dust levels which help to keep your alloys cleaner.
What are the options?
Performance Brake Pads
Uprated brake pads can be fitted to standard discs or uprated discs. The uprated brake pads are far superior to standard factory fitted pads. Performance brake pads offer superior stopping power with lower levels of brake dust.
There are many makes and styles of performance brake pads available. One of the best brands we use is EBC who offer 3 pad styles from fast road to a full on race pad. We recommend you change the front and rear at the same time.
Performance Replacement Brake Discs
The most common brake upgrades we sell are replacement sports brake discs. There are various brands and style of disc available. It is vital to check the condition of your brake discs when changing your brake pads. Using worn or damaged discs with new pads will only damage the pads resulting in poor braking performance. Performance brake pads help to deglaze pads (keeping them free from debris).
Most performance discs feature a variety of different machined styles. These unique high performance brake discs help to reduce stopping distances quite considerably.
The three main styles of disc are:
Cross Drilled
The cross drilled discs allow extra air to flow through the disc. This increased air flow aids cooling and helps to reduce brake fade.
Grooved
The grooved disc increases friction between disc and pad. This increase in friction helps to reduce stopping distances quite considerably.
Combination
The combination disc is both grooved and drilled. The grooved face of the disc helps to increase friction which reduces stopping distances. The drilled holes allow extra air to flow through the disc. This increased air flow aids cooling and helps to reduce brake fade. The combi disc as it is known is our biggest selling style of disc. Check out our own range of Venom Brake Discs for some superb prices on this style of disc!
Big Brake Kits
Big brake kits have been designed for the enthusiast that wants the very best brake kit for their car. These unique brake upgrades replace the complete braking system on the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on the application chosen. Most of these kits include larger diameter discs, performance brake pads, braided brake hoses and larger callipers.
A larger brake disc diameter increases the surface area of pad contact increasing braking efficiency. The larger disc provides greater surface area for the pad to make contact with. The replacement callipers you get in the kits also benefit from a greater number of pistons. A standard calliper on a road car has a two piston calliper (also known as 2 pot). Most big brake conversion kits have a four piston (4 pot) calliper.
These extra two pistons increase the clamping pressure significantly. The more pistons (or pots) listed the stronger the clamping pressure on the disc. Some manufactures list 4 pot, 6 pot, 8 pot and even 10 pot kits! If you are after one of these superb brake upgrades we recommend you look at the Brembo, AP Racing, Tarox or HiSpec brands.
We offer numerous performance brake upgrades from some of the best known manufacturers in the business. We stock Black Diamond, EBC, Brembo, AP Racing, Venom Edition, Tarox, HiSpec, Goodridge, Ferodo, Mintex, ECS and many more!
